STATE HOUSE VOTES TO TABLE AMENDMENTS WHICH WOULD STRENGTHEN PA'S MARRIAGE LAWS On May 26, 2004 by a vote of 96 to 94 SB 296 was
tabled until November 8. SB
296 is a bill amending Title 23 (Domestic Relations) providing for
court orders relating to adoption records.
But more importantly it had amendments that would have
strengthened our marriage laws and prohibited the state from offering
same-sex domestic partner benefits to state employees.
(this was in direct response to Governor Rendell successfully
working to have domestic-partner language added to the International
Service Union and the State System of Higher Education contracts) Representatives Jerry Birmelin and Mark McNaughton offered these amendments to the bill. This caused quite 'a stir' in the State House and Representative Readshaw from Allegheny County made the motion to table the bill. After a heated debate the vote was taken. It has been reported that some members of the pro-life caucus voted in favor of tabling the bill. (Unfortunately the names of the members of this caucus cannot be obtained as all have agreed to keep the membership list a secret!) Below is how your representative voted -- a NO vote is in favor of bringing SB 296 up for a vote now; a YES is in favor of tabling the bill until November 8. More simply-- a NO vote is for the immediate preservation of traditional marriage, a YES vote is a step in trying to avoid the real and present danger of same-sex marriage.
